I am officially an OB patient today; so says Dr. Sikking. I had a complete intake appointment. The baby is still growing faster than I can quite comprehend. We heard the heartbeat again; Dr. Sikking didn't give us a rate this time but it was definitely faster than last time (which is good). And at the end, she surprised us with a 3D/4D ultrasound -- a 3D "video" of our baby.

Our next appointment is probably the first trimester screening, at a specialist's office. This is a fairly new procedure where they do a detailed ultrasound, and I believe a couple of blood tests.

I also learned that all of these machines write to CD-ROM, so I'll start bringing one to these visits.

Marsha:  Back in the old days, when Jon and I had the boys, higher heartbeats were usually boys. Worked twice for us!!

There's an ancient Chinese chart that can predict the baby's gender; it's over 90% accurate. The chart's all over the internet, so I tried a bunch of sites that offer it. They're evenly split, 50-50%, on whether we're having a boy or a girl.

    Will:
Which, I think, means it will be a hermaphrodite.
Seriously though, the Chinese predictions are 100% correct about the probability of gender...

2 of my co-workers, and 1 much-loved alumna, are also 7 weeks pregnant. That's right, we're not just pregnant en masse -- we're all due within a week of each other. ...And are there more?

    We have a heartbeat!

152 -- I'm not sure, 152 whats per what? But anyway, per Dr. Sikking, 152 is normal and healthy at 7 weeks. The baby has grown, more than I thought s/he would, to almost a centimeter. We can see the baby clearly now (if briefly) on the ultrasound, and we can see the heart beating.

Will went with me to this visit. We go back in a week.

*It's 152 beats per minute. That is just as it should be for this stage - Will

I started the progesterone supplements last night.

Will and I are starting to think early pregnancy is preparation for the next few years: I carry snacks with me most of the time, and I mean snacks like string cheese, grapes, little carrots, yogurt ... I'm starting to take naps again; I scout out the bathrooms when I visit an unfamiliar place ... oh, and I can't walk very fast anymore.

My progesterone is low. Too low. Will's been calling around this morning to find a pharmacy that can compound progesterone supplements for me -- today -- and he found one. I just keep reminding myself that a) we've made it this far, and b) my doctor doesn't seem that worried. I see her again on Monday.

Yesterday Will packed us a picnic lunch and we went to the Getty Museum. I was too tired to see more than a couple of small exhibits, but we ate lunch in the Central Garden and then wandered around the gardens.

Dr. Sikking's office has snacks. Bless them.

My appointment was for 9:30, so I ate breakfast, and figured I'd be in to work by the time I was hungry again. Well, I didn't see the doctor until almost 11. (The surgery she performed that morning ran late, etc., etc.) Around 10:30 I started contemplating lying down on the floor. So I asked, and Sandy took me into the kitchen and told me to eat anything I liked.

My actual visit with Dr. Sikking was pretty short, and we spent it all in the ultrasound room, which isn't conducive to questions. Plus, I was eating Chex Mix as fast as I could. She told me to bring a list to my next appointment, in a week and a half.

Part of me has been waiting for this ultrasound. There's no doubt now -- we have a tiny, healthy baby growing exactly the way s/he should be.

Dr. Sikking found, actually I'm not sure what that part was, but inside it is the yolk sac, a clear black spot. And hiding inside the yolk sac is this movement, this fluttering.

    S/he's moving.

It's too early to pick up a heartbeat, although Dr. Sikking tried. She used the word "perfect" a lot, meaning, things look exactly right for this early stage. According to the big machine I'm 5 weeks and 6 days along, but I still think it's 6 weeks tomorrow.

And this morning I did something really unlike me -- I asked Will's help with a multiplication problem (6 times 15).

I've been dizzy and lightheaded for over a week now. Food seems to help.

I did something unlike me today. We stopped at a little lunch place we (used to) like. We put in our orders, and then I went to the restroom.

I'll skip the details, but I left the restroom, went right up to Will and said, "I can't eat here." I was almost in tears.

Will took care of everything. He went over and made up an explanation; they gave us a refund and we left. And when we got home, Will turned the leftovers from the stir-fry he had made me into fried rice.

I still don't quite believe it -- and yet, I knew even before I took the test (at the insistence of my doctor's office). We'd been preparing for our second cycle of IVF.

The (very, very few) people we've told so far are excited and optimistic. I'm just taking this one day after another, and treasuring every day that I get.

I have my first appointment with my Ob/Gyn in 4 days.
