While considering our dinner options tonight, Will and I pulled out a bag of avocados we've been ripening. Els clearly wanted one to play with so we handed her an avocado. It went straight into her mouth (most things do these days). Will and I went back to evaluating our avocados and planning dinner. When we looked down again, we realized that Els had gnawed through the peel and was eating the avocado.

Els had avocado with her dinner tonight.

Sarah:  Good stuff! Did she spit out the peel or did it go down the way of all food? I guess you'll find out pretty soon...So many parents worry about their children being fussy eaters, it's really nice that Els is so catholic in her tastes.

I am continually amazed at what a good eater Eluned has become. It all started around her birthday when she ate cheese tortellini in a Cabernet marinara sauce off of my sister's plate.

A few weeks ago Will and I made nachos the way we like them -- spicy beans, lots of vegetables. We put a wodge down on Els' high chair tray, expecting her to mostly play with it. Instead, she ate it and waved for more. She ate the beans and bell peppers, tomatoes, even scallions. And what went over the side of the high chair was just a little bit of chips and cheese.

Last night we made mushroom stroganoff. Els was asleep on my lap by the time it was ready, but she woke up and I gave her a noodle. She liked it so we gave her more. And then she rolled over and discovered the mother-lode: my whole plate full of stroganoff right behind her. She dove for it. I got my plate out of the way, but I had to pry one little stroganoff-smeared hand loose to move it. The rest of the evening she ate our mushrooms.

Also, and despite what my friend Heather told me, I swore to myself that I would never eat something that Els had spit out. I was wrong.

Sarah:  The Saga of the Gourmet-in-Training. Imagine at her age--tortellini, nachos, stroganoff. Your little girl has good taste (literally)!

Eluned has discovered "hi!" She is delighted whenever she waves and says "hi" to someone and they greet her in return. Will and I get "hi" most mornings now and just about every time we walk in to a room. Bertha and Kautima say that Els welcomes everyone who comes in to their home.

    Comments:
Sarah:  I'm looking forward to "hi" and "hi" back again next time I see her. Ah, the joys of communicating verbally! And the ability to control the interaction by initiating it.

I'm enjoying a certain camaraderie among people who use carriers, slings and wraps to carry our children. Nowadays it's called "babywearing."

Will and I have a Bjorn, a Moby and now an Ergo. The Moby is the blue thing you see in a lot of photos; it's a very long piece of fabric that we wrap and tie around ourselves in such a way that we can tuck Els into the fabric and carry her. The Ergo is the khaki thing; it's a lot like a Bjorn.

We do have a stroller and we use that too, but we get much more use out of our carriers. And as I'm out and about, wearing Els, when I pass another parent with a baby or toddler in a carrier, we nod and smile. It's like we share a secret.

    Eluned snores.

    Comments:
Kate:  Her high palate is probably part of the reason, and it looks like she inherited her Daddy's sinuses. But no, these aren't cute little baby snores. These are "my Grandma drives a semi" snores.
Sarah:  Is it because of a high palate? Little baby snores?

Goats are kitties too, you know.

We took Eluned up to Costanoa, outside of Pescadero, for a weekend away with Nana and Poppa. Costanoa features "luxury camping" -- Will, Els and I stayed in a tent, but our tent had a queen-sized canopy bed with mattress warmers. And, being a tent, the sound of the surf all night. The bathrooms are shared, but they're heated and quit pleasant. Plus we cheated. Nana and Poppa opted for a room at the small lodge, so we borrowed their bathroom and heat as needed.

I wasn't sure how the flights would go now that Els is mobile but once again she traveled beautifully. On the way up she was glued to the window during takeoff and then slept in my lap the rest of the flight. On the way back she was fascinated by both takeoff and landing, and played happily between us during the flight. This was Will's first time flying with her.

We stayed with my parents Friday night, which let us get in a brief but nice visit with Aunt Ginny, and we had breakfast with Anne and Rick (good friends of the family). Then we meandered up the coast to Costanoa and settled in.

The next morning Will and I left Els with two very willing babysitters and went out to breakfast by ourselves. Then all five of us drove in to Pescadero. We started at a farmstand my Mom found that sells nearly 100 different kinds of beans. They had all kinds of interesting stuff, including a greenhouse and aviary out back. Els fell asleep on the way there and slept through the entire visit; we never took her out of her carseat.

She woke up on the way to the Harley Farms Goat Dairy. When we arrived we learned that two baby goats had just been born as we drove up. This is where we discovered that Els calls a goat a "kitty" too.

We drove back through Pescadero proper, stopping at the general store for a few things for lunch and an art/gift shop there. Els ate an entire banana on the way back.

After lunch, my parents relaxed while Will and I took Els to the beach for the very first time ever. Els loved the beach. She loved the walk down through the coastal meadow and the stream that flowed down the beach to let out into the ocean. She loved climbing around the rocks with her Daddy. The beach was supposed to have tidepools, but there wasn't much to them. That was fine, as it was a beautiful secluded beach. We let Els down to crawl around and explore, and she took right to the beach. A few other people came down, and our normally shy girl waved to them like they were old friends.

We all regrouped for a lovely dinner at Costanoa's restaurant, and that night we got a little rain on our tent to go with the surf. The next morning we took it easy and got to the airport rght on time.

Kautima told Will that Nathan, the little 2 (or so) year old boy at Bertha's, just loves Eluned.

Bertha gave everyone animal crackers for a snack. Els ate hers and then held out her hand, and Nathan handed Els his cracker. And when Bertha and Kautima tried to intervene and give it back to Nathan, he insisted that Els should have it.

Sarah:  Love...and it isn't even spring! It's always so heartwarming when little ones (big ones, too!) learn to share.

This weekend we learned that a dog -- especially a small dog or a puppy -- is also a "kitty."
